Sustainable Green Technology in Landscape Architecture

A special talk focused on green technology in landscape architecture was organised by ILAM Centre of Excellence (ICE) in collaboration with Green to Go Urbanscape Sdn. Bhd. About 100 participants attended the half-day talk with the topic landscape effectiveness in thermal effect reduction, greenwall and green roof solutions and stormwater management solutions.

 

Taman Tugu Kuala Lumpur

Greenovation Design Competition Public Exhibition and Voting

Date: 12-14 January 2018

Venue: The Circle Publika

​

A three day exhibition at Publika intended to showcase local design ideas for the top 10 shortlisted Benches and Gazebo design for Taman Tugu Kuala Lumpur. Through the three days exhibition, public will be able to cast their vote on site via the ballot box or LIKE via online voting. More than 1000 votes cast during the exhibition and more than 30,000 likes received on Facebook.

A group of ILAM council, lead by ILAM President visited IALI President, Siti Nurisyah, to establish a stronger relationship between ILAM and IALI and also to study the potential project sites for ILAM CPD Technical Visit programme to Bandung in May 2018.

 

Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards MLAA2017 Jury Session

The Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards or MLAAs have been held over the past 9 years. This is our 10th edition of the award programme in which we have received a total of 165 submissions in 8 categories with an exceptionally high standard across the board. 9 Jurors divided into 3 groups took 2 days to complete the judging process and the result was endorsed by ILAM council members on the second day of judging.

 

ILAM Technical Tour Series 2018

The Heritage Charm of Taiping & Kuala Sepetang

Date: 27-28 January 2018

Venue: Taiping, Bukit Larut and Kuala Sepetang

​

The two-day visit was attended by 50 participants who traveled by both bus, and walked, to explore the heritage town of Taiping. Hosted by Majlis Perbandaran Taiping (MPT), the participants also explored the natural side of Taiping such as Bukit Larut (Maxwell Hill) and sampled the variety of coffees at Antong Coffee Mill. The tour continued to Kuala Sepetang (Port Weld), which is another historical town, by the river, to experience the cultural landscape, natural wonders, and to learn about the traditional trade of charcoal making and sustainable mangrove management systems.

Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards MLAA2017 Site Visit

Following the shortlisted candidates for the jury session of the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards MLAA2017, selected ILAM council members and MLAA Jurors visited selected projects in Klang Valley and Iskandar Johor to determine the winner of the Excellence Awards and Project of the Year.

The Asian Landscape Architecture Society (ALAS) made a courtesy call to the ILAM President and council members at the Faculty of Design and Architecture, UPM, in conjunction with World Urban Forum 9. The visit by Mr Wang Xiujun, the Secretary General of Asian Landscape Architecture Society, sought to work closely with ILAM in terms of knowledge exchange via a study visit to China and further collaboration in landscape publications.

Judging Session

Since 2016, StarProperty.my Awards has been held to commend top developers in Malaysia for their significant contributions in creating a progressive and modern nation by delivering sustainable, innovative and quality property products for the public. This year a total of 21 award categories were introduced and ILAM, represented by President, Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir, served as a member of the jury.

World Urban Forum (WUF9)

ThinkCity, in collaboration with ILAM, organised activities and a showcase at the Urban Village, Medan Pasar, Kuala Lumpur, in conjunction with the 9th session of the World Urban Forum. Among the activities in which ILAM was involved were the various activation programmes engaging the public such as traditional games, handicraft, and environmental art painting.

In-conjunction with the World Urban Forum, ILAM is also involved in several parallel session with counterparts from China. The forums is organised by Asian Landscape Architecture Society and Sustainable Urban Community (SUC) China.

 

StarProperty.my Awards

A month after the jury process, the highly anticipated StarProperty.my Awards took place in Kuala Lumpur with His Highness, the Raja Muda Selangor as the Guest-of-Honour.  ILAM was indeed honoured to be present at this prestigious awards, represented by ILAM President, Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir, who also served as one of the jurors for this award.

A special 17 min talk show was conducted by Bernama TV in conjunction with the celebration of 10 years of Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA). Representing ILAM is LAr. Dr. Suhardi Maulan, ILAM Vice President who talks about the MLAA Awards and the impact to the industry as total. Right after the live show, an interview was also conducted by Bernama News at the same venue.

 

8th Yuan Ye Summit Forum and Asian Landscape Architecture Forum

Several ILAM members, accompanying the ILAM President, attended the prestigious Yuan Yi Summit Forum, and presenting papers. ILAM President, Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir, presented the Landscape Architecture Agenda LAA2050 and the way forward. A heartfelt congratulations is also extended to ILAM Corporate Members, LAr. Lee Chong Hong (Just Right Design, JRD) for winning the Gold Award for 02 Residence, Puchong South and  LAr Phuan Ying Zee (AECOM Perunding Sdn. Bhd.) for the project Transforming Kuala Lumpur Old Heritage Quarter Landscape, River of Life.

 

Taman Tugu Greenovation Design Competition Final Presentation

The final presented of the Taman Tugu Greenovation Design Competition was held in a casual setting of walk through presentation by the top10 finalists for Bench and Gazebo design respectively. Lead by Khazanah Nasional Berhad, Managing Director, Tan Sri Datuk Wira Azman Mokhtar, ILAM President Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir, was among the jury in this final presentation. The final presentation results also taking into account the public voting result which was conducted earlier in January at Publika and via ILAM Facebook. The result of the competition is scheduled to be announced soon in July 2018.

KL Mayor Universal Access Award 2018 Launching Ceremony

Kuala Lumpur City Hall is hosting the Kuala Lumpur Universal Access Award 2018 program for the 2nd edition in 2018. The objectives of this award are to recognize and credit successful building owners, developers and the building team involved in the implementation of universal design and promote universal design within built environment. Nomination is open to the public until 30 June 2018. ILAM Council Members, Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr. Mohd Ramzi Mohd Hussain is appointed as award secretariat meanwhile LAr. Samsul Rohaizad Mohd Jemoner was appointed as one of the jurors.

MLAA Media Roundtable

A special media roundtable session was organised by ILAM and Platinum PR about the then-upcoming Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards MLAA Gala Night 2018 or MLAA10. The roundtable session was attended by more than 10 local media outlets. During the press conference, the ILAM President discussed the type of awards to be given and also gave a glimpse of current landscape top10 trends and showcase a preview of the MLAA 10 anniversary video highlighting the achievements, way forward and the awards’ impact on the winners.

This year’s Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA) was a toast to a decade of Landscape Architecture excellence in Malaysia. Over 730 guests witnessed landscape architecture works, projects and professionals receive recognition and accolades for their innovative and outstanding achievements, during the 10th edition of MLAA, presented by the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM).

 

More than 67 awards were presented that night with the event officiated by guest of honour, YBhg. Dato’ Seri Haji Mohammad bin Mantek, Secretary General of Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government, Malaysia.

DBKL Shade Trees Management Workshop

Putrajaya Arbor Day 2018

The annual Putrajaya Arbor Day is a celebration to appreciate trees, jointly organised by Perbadanan Putrajaya and Malaysia Arborist Society (PArM) to promote awareness on tree and environmental conservation, in line with Putrajaya’s aspiration to be a sustainable city. During the event, trees were planted by the invited guests.

The annual celebration of the World Landscape Architecture Month by the Majlis Daerah Hulu Selangor is hosted by the town of Batang Kali. This year the event not only highlighted the ‘Program Indah Persekitaran 2018’ but also with the landscape expo featuring landscape and gardening products. ILAM President was invited as the Guest of Honour.

 

ILAM Technical Tour Series

Bandung, Indonesia

A special technical study trip participated by around 31 members was organised by ILAM Center of Excellence (ICE). The visit bring the participant to explore eco-tourism sites in Bandung and experience the local cultural landscape and lifestyles. Among places that interesting is the Kampung Daun and Dusun Bamboo which was briefed by the local landscape architects. The participants also visited Bandung Wali Kota and Farm house Susu Lembang (The Hobbiton).

MLAA Showcase - Cyberjaya

A technical tour was organised to highlight the MLAA2017 Award winning projects in Cyberjaya. About 35 ILAM members participated this visit to 4 selected projects, briefed by the landscape architects. The project are Tamarind Square, Verdi Eco-dominium, Cybersquare and Centrus CBD Perdana.

Kuala Lumpur Neighbourhood Urban Farms

The Kuala Lumpur Neighbourhood Urban Farms is a programme under the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Local Agenda 21 initiatives. ILAM was involved in the organizing committee and also serve as the lead jury for the awards. In total 23 local communities in Kuala Lumpur participated in this programme.

MCIEA Awards Assessment

The Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Awards (MCIEA), which is hosted by CIDB Malaysia, is the premier accolade for all-round excellence in this field and an effort to recognise the players’ achievements in the construction industry in Malaysia. On the panel were members from CIDB, SIRIM, IEM, UIAM, with ILAM proudly presented by LAr. Sabaruddin Buang.

ILAM council members make a courtesy call to the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Malaysia KPKT, Datuk Zuraidah Kamaruddin, a day before Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Via this meeting, ILAM hope to collaborate with KPKT in many aspects including providing technical advice and activities support. ILAM also hope the Ministry will look into the matter of Landscape Architect Act and hopefully a reality in the near future.

Taman Tugu Trail Walk

Khazanah Nasional hosted a leisure Taman Tugu Trail Walk as part of an engagement programme for members of the public and professional organizations to experience the forest trail, first hand. The programme started with a project brief at Khazanah Ilmu, followed by a visit to the plant nursery, and the 30 min trail walk. Around 25 participants from ILAM Council Members and ILAM Allstars Young Landscape Architects Group joined the programme.

 

BCI Asia Awards, Malaysia

BCI Asia Awards has established itself as the pioneer of the most anticipated and coveted award for the construction sector across Southeast Asia. Held in seven Asian territories such as Malaysia, the BCI Asia Awards is an annual gala industry event for domestic and international companies to network and collaborate with elite architectural firms, property developers, manufacturers and building service providers. ILAM President, Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir attended this prestigious event.

 

ILAM Playpoint Talk and

Raya Open House

ILAM, in collaboration with Playpoint, hosted a talk about playground technology and ideas. It was presented by two prominent speakers; Janne Eilsø, Education Consultant, Kompan Play Institute, and Anthony Chung, Playground Designer, Kompan Asia Design Studio, who shared the topic; “A Day of Play – Sharing Information to Support Better Playground Designs by Kompan”. The talk was attended by more than 100 participants. The annual social event of a Raya Open House was jointly hosted by ILAM and Playpoint, after the talk.

ILAM AGM 2017/2018

Once again, the ILAM Annual General Meeting was held in June this year, and was attended by 249 members. This year marks the end of the ILAM Council Members’ 2016/2018 term, and so a fresh election was held to determine the new council members for the new session 2018/2020. Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr. Suhardi Maulan was elected as the ILAM President, while Assoc Prof. Dr. LAr. Nor Atiah Ismail was voted in as Vice President.

Sabah Chapter First Chapter Meeting & Raya Gathering

BIM Seminar and Dinner

The Malaysia Professional Centre (BIM) organised a half day seminar about the Impact of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 on the four sectors of Medical and Healthcare, Construction, Agriculture and Social Health. Later in the evening, ILAM Council Members attended the dinner hosted by BIM at the same venue.

IFLA2018 World Congress Singapore
Date: 18-20 July 2018
Venue: Marina Bay Sands, Singapore

Held from 18-20 July 2018 at Marina Bay Sands, the congress concluded successfully with 1,552 attendees. The congress culminated in one of the biggest technical tours organised in Singapore for landscape architects. Prior to the congress, from 16-17 July 2018, Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr Nor Atiah Ismail, Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr Osman Mohd Tahir, Dato’ LAr. Ismail Ngah, LAr. Nazri Saidon, LAr. Charles Teo and LAr. Sharipah Mohamed attended the World Council Meeting.

The Assembly of Landscape Architecture Students Malaysia

This annual event was organised by UiTM Perak Branch, Seri Iskandar Campus, and Landscape Architecture Design Students (LADS). The theme, ‘Imbauan, Penghayatan dan Penerokaan’ aimed to promote the use of the 5 senses in a majority of the activities.

ILAM Technical Tour Series 2018
The Wonders of Ipoh & Royal Belum

Date: 27-29 July 2018
Venue: Ipoh and Royal Belum, Perak

Once again, the ILAM Centre of Excellence (ICE) organised an urban nature heritage tour, this time focusing on Ipoh and Royal Belum. This 3-day study trip attracted around 20 participants who explored the old quarter of Ipoh town. The following day, the group departed to Royal Belum and had an overnight stay on the Boathouse. Among the attractions here are the Sungai Kooi Waterfalls, Fish Sanctuary Sungai Ruok, the Orang Asli Settlement Kampung Aman Damai, along with a fun BBQ and fishing activities.

IFLA2020 Kick-off Meeting

ILAM council members and chapter representatives were called to join in the first IFLA2020 World Landscape Architecture Summit main committee meeting. The objective of the meeting was to discuss the changes of venue to George Town, Penang and the next steps of actions for organising this prestigious international event.

International Summer School
Local Selections by Khazanah Design and Arts Residency Programmes 2018

The creation of the International Summer School OC OPEN CITY is an important initiative, which boasts a strong international vocational aspect. This initiative is oriented towards creating design solutions for “open spaces” in different scales of intervention; from landscape transformation to regeneration of public areas, to specific architectural components. Under Khazanah Design and Arts Residency Programmes 2018 programme, two young landscape architects, LAr. Teng Pe Yang and LAr. Khairul Amin Mirsa Hussain, were selected to attend the programme from 29 August to 14 September 2018 in Milan, Italy. Congratulations!

Royal Floria Putrajaya

Judging Process

The 10th edition of Royal Floria Putrajaya returned with the theme ‘the 10 Wonders of Floria’ featuring the flowers that crowned the past 10 editions of Floria. This year, under the lead of ILAM Centre of Excellence (ICE), the company conducted the jury session for the showcase gardens in various categories. Approximately 15 landscape architects were involved in the jury session.

Royal Floria International

Dialogue 2018
Date: 25-26 August 2018
Venue: Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside

The 2-day Dialogue is a platform for floriculture, horticulture and landscape industry professionals to meet and share ideas in a casual dialogue session. Around 100 participants attended this two-day event, organised in conjunction with Royal Floria Putrajaya 2018, which included panel sessions, site excursions, keynote session and others.

Landscape Asia 2018
Date: 27-29 August 2018

The second edition of the Landscape Asia event was jointly organised by EG Group and ILAM, supported by the National Landscape Department and the Ministry of Housing & Local Government. This second show witnessed healthy participation from various landscape suppliers from across Malaysia, and abroad. In conjunction with the show, a Landscape Asia Green Technology Conference was organised by ICE.

In conjunction with Landscape Asia 2018, a two-day Landscape Asia Green Technology Conference was organised by ILAM Centre of Excellence (ICE). Ministry of Housing and Local Government organised a 3-day meeting to refine the existing Need Statement for architectural works, to be used as a guide specifically for housing projects.

The Young People’s Lab

Venue: Brickfields Asia College (BAC)

The Young People’s Lab, a 1-day workshop, focused on young professionals from the built environment spectrum. The programme engages youths to bring their collective energy, creativity and vision to the table to analyse, discuss and generate ideas and solutions for selected urban enclaves.

Taman Tugu Eco Day

A day of fun with nature, organised by Taman Tugu Kuala Lumpur, opened to the public with talks, performances, documentary screenings. The winners of the Greenovation Design Competition were also announced during the event.

SPICEC 2018

Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) proudly organised the 2nd Seberang Perai International Conference on Ecotourism and Conservation Effort (SPICEC 2018) with the theme ‘Promoting Local Economic Development (LED) Through Ecotourism’. While the SPICEC 2016 Resolution focused on conservation and awareness, this year SPICEC will look at the economic impact of ecotourism on the local community.

ILAM Southern Chapter, in collaboration with SK Medini, Nusajaya, organised a CSR programme, Green Harvest Festival @ Edible Park Nusajaya. About 18 Southern Chapter members were involved in this programme, which included a forest walk and activities such as homemade composting, brain games, SGDs Bingo and many more.

Technical Workshop on Sabah Landscape Standard & Guidelines

ILAM Sabah Chapter participated in a technical workshop on Landscape Standard & Guidelines, organised by Bahagian Landskap Jabatan Perancang Bandar & Wilayah Negeri Sabah. The technical workshop aimed to prepare the Sabah Landscape Development Planning Standard (10% open space) and several other landscape guidelines.

Special Session

with Director General
National Landscape Department

Venue: Putrajaya

A special session was organised by the National Landscape Department with the landscape departments from local councils and local governments in Malaysia. The briefing also touched on the implementation of landscape developments at the local and states level.  Among other matters covered were Malaysian Standards for Landscape Planting Material – Tree Specifications, and Playground Equipment Safety Performance for Public Use.

Aspiring Seberang Perai Photography Awards 2018

The third edition of the Awards once again attracted 1688 submissions, spread across 4 categories. For the third time, ILAM was invited to participate on the jury panel, through this year’s theme, ‘My Sungai Perai’.

SPARK2018
Landscape Architecture International Dialogue

Date: 24-25 October 2018
Venue: Kuala Lumpur Tourism Bureau

For the second time, ILAM organised the international design and idea-based dialogue – SPARK 2018 – in conjunction with KUL Design Month, in October 2018. More than 200 participants joined the two-day event, which featured a Panel Session, Feature Talks, Hands on activities, as well as a hipster walk, all with this year’s theme: Designing City, Inspiring Living. Among the highlights was the Keynote speaker, Kotchakorn Voraakhom, a TED Fellow, who shared  ‘Chulalongkorn University Centennial Park: Creating A Flood-Proof Park by Building It To Flood’.

National Playground
Safety Seminar 2018

The second edition of this seminar was jointly organised by Standards Malaysia, National Landscape Department, Perbadanan Putrajaya and Playground Safety Association of Malaysia (PSAM). ILAM represented by Vice President, Assoc Prof LAr Dr Nor Atiah Ismail.

Think Tank Group
for Balik Pulau Tourism

ILAM Vice President, Assoc Prof LAr Dr Nor Atiah Ismail, was invited by Penang’s State Government to be a panel member of the Balik Pulau Tourism Think Tank group, to discuss and brainstorm the potential of Balik Pulau, Penang, and to look into how tourism can benefit the local economy at Balik Pulau. The session was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

Minister of Works office

A special courtesy call was conducted by ILAM to the Minister of Works, YB Tuan Baru Bian, to provide an update to the Ministry on the development of the landscape industry in Malaysia, to seek support from the ministry on the Landscape Architect Act, and to seek future collaborations between ILAM and the Ministry.

Butterworth Fringe Festival

BFF 2018

Seberang Perai Municipal Council, with the full support of the Penang State Government, and in collaboration with ThinkCity Sdn Bhd, organised the Butterworth Fringe Festival 2018 (BFF 2018), which aims to preserve the heritage of the city of Butterworth through arts and cultural festivities. The Aspiring Seberang Perai Photography Awards (ASPP), organised by MPSP and Spirit of Perai Sdn Bhd., made its way for the 3rd time to BFF as a must-see photography exhibition, featuring award-winning entries with the theme “MySungaiPerai”. Assoc Prof LAr. Dr Osman Mohd Tahir represented ILAM during the award ceremony.

A special courtesy call was conducted by ILAM to the Minister of Federal Territories, YB Tuan Haji Khalid Abd Samad, to provide an update to the Ministry on the landscape industry in Malaysia and to seek support from the ministry on the Landscape Architect Act, and the organisation of IFLA2020 World Landscape Architects Summit.

KUL Design 2018

Appreciation Night

With a total of 18 organisations joining this year’s KUL Design Month 2018, the event has grown from strength to strength. To celebrate and conclude this year’s event, Kuala Lumpur City Hall invited all the organising partners under one roof to celebrate with music and food. ILAM is grateful to be a part of KUL Design for the second year.

Tree Planting by Landscape Architects

Venue: Sekolah Islam Hidayah, JB

ILAM Southern Chapter, in collaboration with UTM and Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru (MBJB), organised a tree-planting activity at the school compound, as part of a CSR activity. About 20 mature trees were planted by 5 landscape architects, along with the help of general workers and school officers.

Site Briefing and Press Conference

Venue: Butterworth, Penang

ThinkCity, in collaboration with ILAM, and in partnership with Majlis Perbandaran Seberang Perai (MPSP), is calling upon Malaysians from all walks of life to contribute fresh and exciting ideas for creating new public spaces for the Butterworth community. On 7 December 2018, an official site briefing and also press conference was organised, which attracted more than 250 participants, and various members of the media fraternity.

Perth Technical Visit
Date: 26 – 28 December 2018
Venue: Perth, Australia

18 members from ILAM joined the technical tour to Perth, Australia, co-organised by MDLA and ILAM Centre of Excellence (ICE). The 3 days visit to Perth covered some of the best projects and sites.

​

The programme started with visiting some of the urban design at Elizabeth Quay and followed by a bicycle ride at Frazer’s Point to study some of the Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) approaches such as wetlands and stormwater management.
 

On the second day, the participants explored King’s Park, a historical botanical park. Among the features here are the nature playground, natural trail, and bicycle lane design.

The third day focused are on the space design and planning at Subiaco township where participants learn about spatial, art and sculptures, and playground design. The visit was concluded with the visiting of Perth Cultural Centre where a guided walk is conducted.
