A courtesy call was made to the Mayor of Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu (DBKK), Datuk Abidin Madingkir, organised by ILAM Sabah Chapter and attended by ILAM President, Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir. The objective of the meeting was to express ILAM’s appreciation to the city mayor for the donation of RM6,000 to the ILAM Humanitarian Programme – Rebuilding Ranau 2.0. During the meeting, a mock cheque was presented by the Mayor of DBKK to the ILAM President. There was also a visit to the Landscape Department at DBKK, directly after the courtesy call.

Rebuilding Ranau 2.0

Following the success of the first ILAM humanitarian programme, ‘Rebuiding Ranau’ in October 2015, ILAM Sabah Chapter once again organised the ‘Rebuilding Ranau 2.0’, focused at Kampung Sinisian, Ranau. With the donation from Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu (DBKK), the group installed 2 units each of 800 and 900 gallon water tanks as the backup water supply to the villages, due to constant water disruption in that area.

MLAA Jury Session

Date: 15-17 January 2016

Venue: ILAM Office at ALAMi

 

The annual Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards has witnessed an increase in submissions this year to 130, spread across 7 categories. The 3 day jury session was conducted at the ILAM office and Alami Garden Hotel. A total of 10 jurors were divided into 3 groups looking at different categories, with this year an international judge, Ariya Arunita, from the Thai Association of Landscape Architects (TALA), being invited to participate.

ASLAR Visits Landscape Institute (LI)

A courtesy call of the Alumni Society of Landscape Architecture, ASLAR (UiTM) was made to the Landscape Institute (LI) in United Kingdom. This event aimed to foster relationships between ASLAR, ILAM and LI. The visit was represented by LAr. Zainul Fazli Zaini, aka Encik Senyum. During the visit, our latest edition of the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Yearbook was presented as a gift to the Landscape Institute.

 

Singapore Greens 2.0

Following the success of the first edition of Singapore Greens in May 2015, another technical visit to Singapore was organised by the ILAM Southern Chapter committee, in January 2016. With the theme of ‘Green Infrastructure and waterways’, this tour focused on the role of landscape being an essential element in remediating environmental issues such as urban heat island, flash-flood, greenhouse effect etc. due to rapid urbanisation. Using Singapore as a case study, the 3 focus areas were ‘Play Features’, ‘Vertical Greenery’ and ‘Water Sensitive Urban Design’. This tour attracted 50 ILAM members for the two day event.

MLAA Site Inspection

Following the jury session for the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards, the team, consisting of judges and ILAM council members, visited 7 selected projects from the Professional, Contractor and Developer Categories. The two day visit was also covered by The Star Property, which is also the media partner for the MLAA Gala Night. The site visit allowed the jury to determine the winner of the Excellence Awards and the Project of the Year Award.

 

ILAM Professional Practice Course (KAIAL)

The ILAM Professional Practice Course (KAIAL) returned with greater participation of 68 candidates sitting for the two day course in preparation for the professional examination on 27-28 February 2016. The courses were conducted in 4 modules and 13 sub-topics. The modules were: Professional Practice & Code of Ethics; Landscape Governance; Planning, Design & Construction; Project Management.

 

MCT Cybersouth Central Park
Landscape Design Competition

Briefing Session
Date: 2 February 2016
Venue: One City

MCT Berhad, with the collaboration of ILAM, organised a landscape design competition for the development of Central Park at Cybersouth City, Cyberjaya. About 20 landscape consultants attended the briefing session, conducted by LAr. Charles Teo, followed by a Q&A session to answer any project site enquiries. Competition closing date is set for 10 March 2016.

 

‘Malaysia SME’ Interview
Date: 19 February 2016
Venue: Faculty of Design & Architecture

An interview was initiated by the publication ‘Malaysia SME,‘ about ILAM, and the development of the landscape architecture profession in Malaysia. The interview also focused on opportunities and risks in the landscape architecture profession in Malaysia, specifically for SME businesses. The one and a half hour interview was completed by ILAM President, Assoc Prof LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir and the article is scheduled to be published in early March.

Sime Darby Property
Threatened Forest Tree Guidelines

Date: 22 February 2016
Venue: Sime Darby Property, Oasis Ara Damansara

A collaboration was carried out between ILAM and Sime Darby to develop a guideline for threatened forest trees for the use of future Sime Darby developments. A further meeting was held at the Sime Darby Property office to report the findings. ILAM was represented by LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir, LAr. Sabarudin Buang, LAr. Dr. Suhardi Maulan, LAr. Abd. Aziz Othman, LAr. Danial A. Hasan and LAr. Dr. Samsul Khamis

 

Consultancy Session

for Vertical Landscape

Guideline Preparation

LAr. Dr. Mohd Ramzi Mohd Hussain represented ILAM at the consultancy session for vertical landscape guidelines, which was initiated based on the decision made during the working committee meeting of the Malaysia Green Technology and Climate Change Council (MTHPI). The session was to discuss and provide technical input for the development of the guidelines.
 

 

FLORIA 360 Book Launch

Venue: Taman Warisan Pertanian, Putrajaya

A collaboration between ILAM and Putrajaya Floria Sdn. Bhd. has come to fruition with the first FLORIA coffee table book, FLORIA 360, being finally launched, highlighting the best of Royal FLORIA Putrajaya 2015 showcase, through the perspective of landscape architecture. The 160 page book was launched by Perbadanan Putrajaya President, Datuk Seri Haji Hasim Haji Ismail.

ILAM Professional Examination

A month after the KAIAL Professional Courses, the annual ILAM Professional Examination was held in Universiti Teknologi MARA, (UiTM) for two days, to certify the next batch of professional Landscape Architects. This year, there were 87 candidates sitting for professional examinations. We wish the candidates all the best of luck.

In conjunction with the National Landscape Day Celebrations 2016, an exclusive 60 min TV interview about the role of landscape architecture and the industry’s contribution to the well being of the people and economic growth in general was held. This live interview was represented by ILAM Council Member, LAr. Dr. Suhardi Maulan, and Honorary Secretary, LAr. Dr. Nor Atiah Ismail.

 

National Landscape Day 2016 Exhibition & Public Workshop
Date: 5-6 March 2016
Venue: Petra Jaya, Kuching, Sarawak

The annual National Landscape Day was once again celebrated by the National Landscape Department. This two day event, held in Kuching, Sarawak, was filled with exhibitions and workshops. ILAM set up an exhibition booth, thanks to our local representative members from ILAM Sarawak Chapter. The event aimed to provide insight and knowledge for the public about the profession of landscape architecture.

MCT-ILAM Cybersouth Central Park Landscape Design Competition Shortlisting Session

The MCT – ILAM Cybersouth Central Park Landscape Design Competition is a design competition to seek the best design for the incoming urban park in Cybersouth township, located to the south of Cyberjaya. A total of 25 entries from local consultants were received and a shortlisting session was held at One City to select the top 5 best designs for the final submissions.

 

The StarProperty.my Awards 2016

It was a glittering and memorable night as the country’s top property developers were honoured at the inaugural StarProperty.my Awards 2016. Leading the pack were 10 local developers who received the “All-Star Award – Top Ranked Developers of the Year” accolade for consistency in creating and adding value to property projects. ILAM was part of the jury panel, consisting of 10 individuals from various backgrounds. Among those are ILAM President and Hon. Treasurer.
 

 

Focus Group Discussion

for Islamic Garden Research

A focus group discussion was organised in the Faculty of Design & Architecture, UPM, to formulate the framework and principles of Malaysia Contemporary Islamic Gardening, its characteristics, and the true value and meaning for great Islamic gardens around the world. This is aimed to formulate a framework to serve as a guide for the design of contemporary Islamic gardens in Malaysia.

Hulu Selangor World Landscape Architecture Month Celebration

A special and inaugural World Landscape Architecture Month celebration was organised by Hulu Selangor District Council in an effort to recognise the landscape architecture profession. Among the activities to engage public interest are gardening stores, a landscape design competition  and much more. The event was graced by Dato’ LAr. Ismail Ngah and LAr. Meor Saadon Sofian Mior Razali, (Deputy Director General of the National Landscape Department)

Korea’s Seoul Broadcasting System, SBS Interview

A special team from Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS) in Daejeon, visited ILAM President, Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir, for special coverage about Malaysia’s national flower; the Hibiscus. The interview highlighted Malaysia’s love for the Hibiscus, (Bunga Raya), and looked into park management, landscape architectural trends, and education systems. The program was conducted by reporter Miss Hye-Won Cho, and will be aired on prime time news in Korea.

A special media engagement session was organised at One World Hotel, Bandar Utama, a week prior to the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA) Gala Night. The press conference was to announce the upcoming MLAA awards, the categories, and the awards to be presented during the gala night. More than 20 media representatives from print and tv stations attended.

The 8th edition of the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA) Gala Night was celebrated with a colourful theme of Awesome 60’s, attended by more than 720 guests and honouring the crème de la crème of the landscape architectural industry. The evening was graced by YB. Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique, Deputy Minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government (KPKT). This evening also witnessed the awards being presented to winners selected from 130 entries under 7 categories.

Malaysia Design Road Map Workshop

The Malaysia Design Road Map Workshop, initiated by the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation Malaysia, spearheaded by Majlis Rekabentuk Malaysia (MRM), is Malaysia’s socio economic development guide through design. The Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM), participated in the Public / Service group to champion the birth of the National Design Act. ILAM was represented by LAr. Sharipah Mohamed (Asst. Hon. Treasurer).

 

 

MCT-ILAM Cybersouth Central Park Landscape Design Competition - Final Top 5 Presentation

The final presentation round of the Top 5 competitors listed below set the bar high. The final 5 presented the best concepts and details which captivated the jury’s attention. The presentation was judged by selected jurors include Ar. Shawn Chong (MCT Associate Director, Architecture Department), Ar. Lee Chor Wah (MCT Design Director), Teh Heng Chong (MCT Chief Marketing Officer), and from ILAM and IFLA, Assoc Prof LAr. Dr Osman Mohd Tahir (ILAM President), LAr. Dr. Nor Atiah Ismail (ILAM Hon Secretary), LAr. Mohd Fadrillah Mohd Taib (ILAM Ex-officio, Fellow), Dato’ LAr. Ismail Ngah (Fellow), and Soehartini Tinoek Sekartjakrarini (IFLA Asia Pacific).

 

Asian Landscape Architecture Conference & 6th Yuan Ye Submit

ILAM President, Assoc Prof LAr. Dr Osman Mohd Tahir, was once again invited to speak and present a paper at the Asian Landscape Architecture Conference, held in Nanjing, China. The 2 day conference aims to enhance international co-operation and exchange of knowledge across the landscape industry. Via this conference, networking opportunities also strengthen the working relationship between countries to further elevate the landscape industry.

 

MCT-ILAM Cybersouth Central Park Award Ceremony

Venue: Cybersouth Sales Gallery, Cyberjaya

The MCT-ILAM Cybersouth Central Park Landscape Design Competition, has come to a conclusion with the crowning of the first prize winner at the launching ceremony of Cybersouth Sales Gallery at Cyberjaya.

Landart Design Sdn. Bhd. walked away with the first prize of RM10,000, and a Cybersouth Central Park design contract. The second prize winner was Hoda Design Sdn. Bhd. Third prize goes to Provinca Landscape Design Sdn. Bhd. in collaboration with DLA Pte. Ltd., while Clouston Design (M) Sdn. Bhd. and Zaenviro Studio won fourth and fifth place respectively.
 

 

ILAM Southern Chapter
Professional Discourse Series 2016

Venue: Various Project Sites in Johor Bahru

The ILAM Southern Chapter organised a two day professional discourse series aimed to provide a platform for developing expertise through sharing experience and knowledge from professional practising landscape architects and to foster a relationship between the practitioners and the programme participants. The first session, on 15 May, brought participants to visit some of the park projects in Johor Bahru, while the second session, on 22 May, brought the group to Kota Iskandar and Nusajaya, for the latest township and residential developments.

Royal FLORIA Putrajaya 2016
Jury Process

This year, ILAM once again become the Smart Partner of Royal FLORIA Putrajaya 2016, with the involvement in the jury process for the garden showcases and outdoor exhibits. With the capacity of 20 jurors from ILAM, the jury process took one full day, in 5 different groups, ranging from designer gardens, special gardens, to government agencies and private sectors, as well as gardens from higher learning institutions and school children.

 

Royal FLORIA International Dialogue (RFID)
Date: 27-28 May 2016
Venue: PICC, Putrajaya

In conjunction with Royal FLORIA Putrajaya 2016, the Royal FLORIA International Dialogue (RFID) is organised in collaboration with ILAM to act as a catalyst for an industry that caters to professional players in landscape architecture, flowers and floral design, horticulture, floriculture and other related fields. Accordingly, RFID holds the potential to be the platform for cooperative linkages and networking, imports and exports, and research and development activities in the landscape and floral industries. ILAM President, Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir, Asst. Honorary Secretary, LAr. Charles Teo, and LAr. Phuan Ying Tze, are among those presenting a paper during the event.
 

 

ILAM AGM 2016/2018

Once again, the ILAM Annual General Meeting was held in June this year and was attended by more than 100 members. This year marks the end of the ILAM Council Members’ 2014/2016 term, and so a fresh election was held to determine the new council members for the new session 2016/2018. Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir was elected as the ILAM President for a second term. Details of the Council Members and Committee line up can be found in this publication.

 

ILAM Corporate Members Certification Ceremony

Venue: Hilton Kuala Lumpur

During this year ILAM AGM, ILAM also presented the certificate to all 26 successful landscape architects who passed the ILAM Professional Examination in February 2016 and become the newly crowned Corporate Members.

The Certificate of Appreciation was also presented to all ILAM Council Members and Chapter representatives for their excellent contributions throughout the 2014/2016 session.

 

 

National Occupational Skills Standard (NOSS) Techinical Evaluation Committee Meeting

National Occupational Skills Standard (NOSS), is defined as a specification of competencies expected of a skilled worker who is gainfully employed in Malaysia for an occupational area. It was developed together with industrial experts in line with the provisions under National Skills Development Act 2006 (Act 652). ILAM was involved in the skill area of “Landscape Supervisor” and the meeting was attended by ILAM President, Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir, and Council Member, LAr. Noriah Mat.

 

Landscape Architect Act Memorandum Briefing to Ministries and Government Agencies

Following up from the Memorandum of Landscape Architect Act which was distributed to the Ministries and central Government Agencies, a briefing session was conducted by National Landsscape Department, Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing & Local Government to gather feedback with regards to the Act. Several ILAM Council Members and the President attended the briefing session.

 

 

ILAM Road Map Session
Date: 20 August 2016
Venue: Concorde Hotel Shah Alam

A one day workshop was organised by ILAM between ILAM Council and ILAM Chapter representatives. The workshop started with a briefing from the ILAM President about the current scenario of the profession and highlighted a few key areas such as ILAM Visibility, Programme, Chapter by Law and ILAM Business Entity to be discussed during the afternoon session.
 

 

Workshop for Draft Healthy Walkable City Guideline
Date: 22 August 2016
Venue: Perbadanan Putrajaya

A briefing and engagement session was conducted for the stakeholders about the preparation of a Guideline for Healthy Walkable City by Jabatan Perancangan Bandar & Desa Semenanjung Malaysia (Peninsular Malaysia, Urban and Rural Planning Department). The objective is to create and promote a walkable environment in the urban area and promote a healthy lifestyle. ILAM Vice President, LAr. Dr. Suhardi Maulan attended the workshop session.

 

ILAM – MGBC CPD Series
Integrated Storm Water

Design Solutions
Date: 24-25 August 2016
Venue: Vivatel KL, Putrajaya & Cyberjaya

This two day joint CPD event was organised by ILAM and Malaysia Green Building Confederation MGBC to educate the various professionals from engineers, architects, planners and landscape architects about various design solutions for storm water catchments from the perspective of landscape architecture. The first day programme focused on full day presentations about various scales of storm water design from urban centres to community enclaves and also looked into design and planting aspects. The second day programme focused on site visits to Putrajaya Wetlands and Lepironia Gardens at Setia Eco Glades. The programme attracted around 80 participants from various professions.

ILAM Graduate Member Forum

& Hari Malaysia Get Together

The ILAM Graduate Members came together under one roof to voice their views and opinions about the profession. The session also provided a platform for members to share opinions for improvement. A get together programme to celebrate Malaysia Day was also held after the forum to celebrate our diversity as Malaysians.

 

Putrajaya Tropical Bamboo Forest
Briefing

Venue: Perbadanan Putrajaya

LAr. Mohd Fadrillah Mohd Tahir attended a briefing on the new theme Bamboo Garden within the Taman Botani Putrajaya, which will be the new attraction of the park. The briefing was conducted by Malaysia Bamboo Society alongside Perbadanan Putrajaya.

 

Bangkok Green Quest Planning Trip
Date: 12-15 September 2016
Venue: Bangkok

A pre-technical planning trip was conducted with 13 ILAM council members and private individuals who visited potential landscape projects for the upcoming ILAM Technical Visits in Thailand in early December 2016. The group also made a courtesy call to Chulalongkorn University and Thai Association of Landscape Architects (TALA).

 

Workshop for ILAM

Certification Courses

ILAM organised a workshop exploring various expert fields as an add-on certification for the landscape architecture profession. Special expertise fields such as green infrastructure, visual impact assessment, landscape management and many more were among the topics discussed.

 

PAM Gold Medal 2016
Date: 8 October 2016
Venue: Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur

PAM Gold Medal is the highest honour awarded by Persatuan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM), and recognises lifetime achievement in architecture by Malaysian architects whose careers have endowed the profession with great distinction and have promoted the advancement of architecture, both in Malaysia and Internationally. This black tie event was attended by ILAM President, Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir and ILAM Fellow/BIM President, Dato’ LAr. Ismail Ngah.

 

Workshop on Refinement of

Draft Landscape Architect Act

A refinement session for the Landscape Architect Act was conducted by the National Landscape Department (JLN) to ensure the draft can be presented to the Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government. The session was chaired by Deputy Director General (Development), JLN, Puan Hajjah Rotina Mohd Daik.

 

Taman Tugu Focus Group Engagement
Date: 12 September 2016
Venue: KL Sentral

A special focus group encompassing several professional bodies was conducted by Khazanah Nasional Berhad, to share the concept and master plan behind the development of the urban forest park, Taman Tugu. The park will serve as an urban forest linking the existing Perdana Botanical Gardens to various public transport hubs.

 

MIP Planning Excellence Awards Jury Session

The MIP Awards for Planning Excellence aims to showcase projects and works which are able to respond to market needs, demonstrate the highest degree of skills in planning, create significant benefits to the public and take into consideration the local environment. ILAM was delighted with our jury representative, Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr. Mohd Ramzi Mohd Hussain.

 

GBI Township Tool Awareness Talk

The new and improved GBI Township Tool awareness talk, conducted by Ar. Serina Hijjas, gave an insight to fellow landscape architects and also served as a platform to discuss and improve the next version. Following on from the talk, ILAM members have formed several expertise groups to further provide feedback.

 

 

Meeting with Deputy Minister, KPKT

Venue: Parlimen Malaysia

An informal meeting was held at the lobby of Parliament House, with Deputy Minister of Urban Well-being, Housing and Local Government (KPKT), YB Datuk Halimah binti Mohamed Sadique, regarding the Landscape Architects Bill and issues related to the landscape architecture profession in Malaysia as well as the collaboration between ILAM and KPKT, for future landscape development in Malaysia.

 

Koi Pond – Combining Aesthetics and Advanced Technology
Date: 27 October 2016
Venue: Waterco Sungai Buloh Office

Waterco, a manufacturer and distributer
of a diverse range of products for koi ponds, swimming pools, and spa and water treatment markets, hosted a half day visit for ILAM members to the factory to further understand the products. Attended by 35 participants, the visit touched on the design and technical aspect of ponds.

 

IFLA Asia Pacific

Council Meeting 2016

Venue: Canberra, Australia

The 2016 International Festival of Landscape Architecture is taking place in Canberra, Australia’s capital city. The program includes the IFLA Asia Pacific Congress, a Short Film Competition, National Conference, National Landscape Architecture Awards and a host of public and industry tours, exhibitions, city activations, screenings and talks. Johor Landscape Day 2016

ILAM Southern Chapter Chairman, LAr. Mohd Zai Kandar, was invited to be the head juror of the state landscape competition at the annual Johor Landscape Day 2016 celebrations. This programme showcased a close working relationship between ILAM Southern Chapter, National Landscape Department, Johor and local governments.

 

ILAM Meets MIP

ILAM CPD Committee made a courtesy call to the Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP) and met with Pn. Khairiah Talha, to further understand the CPD programme development at MIP, and to ensure a closer working relationship between ILAM and MIP in future events. ILAM was represented by LAr. Sharipah Mohamed, LAr. Charles Teo, and Fatin Aqilah Abd. Jalil.

 

KPKT: Urban Wellbeing Carnival

Venue: Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur

ILAM was part of the Urban Wellbeing Carnival organised by the Ministry of Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government at Dataran Merdeka, as part of World Habitat Day celebrations. ILAM was among the organisations which exhibited at the carnival and gave the general public an insight into the profession.

French Chamber of Commerce

The French Chamber of Commerce and Industry (French CCI), called for a meeting with ILAM to discuss the partnership in the upcoming Piscine Asia, a 2-day conference and trade exhibition about swimming pools and spas, in Singapore, from 5-6 April 2017. LAr. Dr. Suhardi Maulan, and LAr. Dr. Nor Atiah Ismail, were among those who attended the meeting. As a result, ILAM agreed to be part of this internationally acclaimed exhibition in Singapore, with the promise of CPD points given to members who attend.

Bangkok Green Quest 01

Date: 7-9 December 2016
Venue: Bangkok and Khao Yai

Bangkok Green Quest is ILAM’s first Bangkok Landscape Technical Study trip. This event featured landscape design works from various young Thai landscape architects. The visits exposed all 42 participants to various completed projects alongside face to face interaction with local landscape architects from Shma Soen, Trop Design, and LAB. Detail on feature section of this publication.

ILAM EGM 2016

An EGM was called to hold a discussion and receive consent from the members on two matters, namely, Chapter by Law, and establishment of ILAM’s registered company. The meeting received full support from the members to proceed with the two issues discussed.
