An online seminar was organised by the Faculty of Design and Architecture (UPM) in collaboration with ILAM, offering expert’s opinions on landscape and sustainability for the future. The session looks into the sustainability importance in all levels of our community development with solutions for the future. The session was moderated by Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Nor Atiah Ismail and Assoc Prof Ts Dr Osman Mohd Tahir as the expert speakers.

IFLA2020 Advisory Committee and Working Committee Meeting

IFLA2020 World Landscape Architecture Summit was postponed from August 2020 to 2021 due to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Physical attendees were not possible due to the uncertainties of international travels and local high COVID-19 infection rate. To continue with the event, the organising committee has hosted two separate workshops with IFLA2020 Board of Advisors and Working Group to discuss the event’s possibility of entirely being conducted via the online platform.

EdgeProp Malaysia’s Best Managed
& Sustainable Property Awards 2021 Judging Process

Established in 2017, EdgeProp Malaysia’s Best Managed and Sustainable Property Awards entered its 5th instalment in 2021, seeking to recognise real estate with excellent management and sustainability. This year, ILAM was represented by Vice President, Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr. Nor Atiah Ismail as a jury with the session, was conducted fully online.
National Landscape Day 2021
2nd - 3rd March 2021 / Via Zoom
This year, the National Landscape Department (JLN) celebrated National Landscape Day online via a two-day webinar live streaming on Facebook. This event was also in conjunction with 25 years of JLN. The online event was officiated by the Minister of Housing and Local Government Malaysia (KPKT), YBhg. Datuk Hj. Zuraida Kamaruddin, jointly organised by ILAM, MyParks and ThinkCity. More than 12 selected speakers presented during the webinar to share their expertise on the theme: “Towards the Future Landscape: Localising Sustainable Development Goals.”
Executive Talk:
The Influence of Planting Design Towards Low Carbon City

In conjunction with National Landscape Day 2021, The Centre of Landscape Management Studies, I-KPKT organised a talk on planting design for Low Carbon City. This event was jointly organised by ILAM and PALMA. The talk focused on ‘How plant function and selection may contribute as one of the factors to achieve low carbon design’. This session was presented by Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr. Sapura Mohamad, Head, Landscape Architecture Department, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Skudai.
Meeting with MyCC

A special meeting was conducted between ILAM and The Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC) to understand the purpose of enforcing the Competition Act 2010 to safeguards the process of free and fair competition in commercial markets for the benefit of consumer welfare, efficiency of enterprises and the development of the economy as a whole.
ICE Virtual Courses 01

This course was the first Virtual Course Series organised by ILAM Centre of Excellence (ICE) in 2021. This webinar offered insight to those seeking to level up their knowledge on contract management in landscape construction. It covered two topics: Contract Administration for Landscape Construction and Contract Disputes and Mediation for Landscape Construction. This event has gained good participation and a great start to the 2021 series.
Executive Talk: Landscape Architecture Code of Conduct

An Executive Talk was organised on the topic ‘Landscape Architecture Code of Conduct: Empowering the Professionals Through the Malaysia Competition Act 2010’ on the 16th March 2021, hosted by I-KPKT. The joint session was organised by ILAM with panel speakers from ILAM and MyCC.
RTM’s Sustainable Environment Programme Filming

A special episode of RTM’s latest production focused on a sustainable environment with the guest from ILAM, LAr. Nazri Ishak. The programme covered how green infrastructure in urban development can combat climate change and provide a more environmentally friendly approach. The filming session also covered some of the parks as the feature.

A joint professional talk series was organised by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Heritage Landscape Research Group (HELA) and ILAM on Landscape Conservation Project, focusing on implementation strategies and Challenges. The session was moderated by LAr. Dr. Zanariah Jasmani with the guest speaker, LAr. Mohd Tajul Ashikin Mohd Tajuddin from Tajul LandArt.
Seminar On Issues
in the Construction Industry

Jointly organised by various professional bodies and ILAM, the seminar entitled: “Contemporary Issues in the Malaysian Construction Industry; Sustainable and Green Construction – Are we on the right trajectory?” focuses on Malaysian sustainable and green construction initiatives and their challenges on implementation. LAr. Dr Sallehuddin Mat Noor represented ILAM and UPM in this session.
Star Property Awards

The annual Star Property Awards judging session is back with ILAM represented by the President, Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr. Suhardi Maulan, together with representatives from other professional associations. The submission also sees the increased emphasis on landscape elements in each of the current property developments.
Courtesy Call to
National Landscape Department Office

A courtesy call was organised by ILAM, headed by the President, Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr Suhardi Maulan, to the new National Landscape Department, Director General office, to officially introduce ILAM new council members and discuss the possible collaborations between ILAN and JLN specifically on the upcoming IFLA2020 World Congress.
Rewilding Ipoh – The Landscape Architecture Perspective
3rd April 2021 / Ipoh
Organised by Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh (MBI), ILAM supported this campaign on greening Ipoh Town called “Rewilding Ipoh - The Landscape Architect’s Perspective”. The project is a collaboration between MBI and UPM, formulating a landscape Masterplan proposal of Ipoh Old Town and Sungai Kinta. During the launch, there was a tree-planting ceremony and revealing the upgraded portion of Taman Dr Seenivasagam into an urban farm; funded by the National Landscape Department. The city Mayor of Ipoh attended this event. Congratulations to MBI.
EdgeProp Malaysia’s Best Managed
& Sustainable Property Awards 2021

The awards ceremony in 2020 went into the virtual realm due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2021 awards gala night was held at One World Hotel, Petaling Jaya, graced by Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin. Sime Darby Property’s 300-acre Elmina Central Park in the City of Elmina, Shah Alam, Selangor received the EdgeProp Malaysia Editor’s Choice Award as Malaysia’s Exemplary Sustainable Community Park 2021. It also bagged the Gold of EdgeProp-ILAM Malaysia’s Sustainable Landscape Awards in the Landscape Planning category.
Evaluate of Pantai Kebagu
& Bukit Helang as a Tourism Spot

ILAM Sabah Chapter was invited to the event organised by Jabatan Pembangunan Pelancongan Bandaraya, Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu (DBKK) at Kampung Kebagu, Karambunai, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The purpose of the event was to evaluate the potential of Pantai Kebagu and Bukit Helang as a tourism spot. During the visit, the participants helped to clean the beach followed by hiking at Bukit Helang.
Malaysia City Nature Challenge (MYCNC)

The City Nature Challenge (CNC) is an international initiative for people to find and document plants and wildlife in cities across the globe. ILAM is the only professional body that joined as the co-organiser with SEKITAR to organise Malaysia City Nature Challenge (MYCNC). This event was managed by the ILAM Northern Chapter with CPD 2 awarded to any ILAM members who uploaded more than 40 species (plants or wildlife) starting from 30th April 2021 till 9th May 2021.

Johor Menteri Besar Office

A courtesy call was organised by ILAM Southern Chapter and headed by ILAM President, Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Suhardi Maulan, to the Johor Menteri Besar Office accompanied by ILAM Southern Chapter Committee Members. The visit aims to introduce the landscape architecture professionals to Johor Government and to seek close collaboration between a professional association and state government.

Stormwater Management

ILAM Centre of Excellence (ICE) was proud to bring the second virtual course on “Stormwater Management - A Landscape Project Management Approach”. The webinar focused on the concept of green infrastructure in stormwater management as one of the approaches to an ongoing landscape architecture project. The webinar also provided an insight into challenges and ways forward in applying green infrastructure in stormwater management projects.
Penang Roadshow
to China 2021

Penang Virtual Roadshow to China 2021 organised by Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau (PCEB), aimed to initiate and organise a digital trade show, connecting Penang’s finest sellers to major Chinese buyers. This roadshow aims to build, foster and enrich the Chinese buyers with Penang Industry’s forums, newsletters and all modes of communication including social media. ILAM was invited as one of the speakers to focus on the IFLA2020 World Landscape Architects Summit, presented by LAr. Fong Jeng Jong.
IFLA2020 Special Meeting
with KILA

A special meeting was held between ILAM with the President of Korean Institute of Landscape Architects (KILA) Prof Zoh, Kyung Jin and the team to discuss the format for the IFLA2020 Closing Ceremony and the flag handover ceremony to the next host, Korean. KILA also expressed their willingness to participate in the upcoming IFLA2020.
IFLA2020 Special Forum
for Climate Emergency

A meeting was held online with the chairwomen for IFLA Climate Emergency Working Group - Kotchakorn Voraakhom to incorporate a special session entitled “Climate Emergency from All Continents: Landscape Architects in Action” as part of IFLA2020 programmes. This programme involved experts from all 5 regions of IFLA.
IFLA2020 Student Design Competition Final Judging

The final judging session of the student design competition was conducted online via Zoom, following up two rounds of blind shortlisting of 200+ entries. The session was chaired by the IFLA Student Design Competition chairman, Mr. Damian Tang. The winner announcement of the Student Design Competition was scheduled for the Opening Ceremony of IFLA2020 on 18th August 2021.

Kopitiam Open Studio

A special discussion was conducted by the chair of Kopitiam Open Studio, LAr. Liew Ying Yie with 12 Malaysian landscape consultants who participated in the upcoming IFLA2020. The team had a detailed discussion on the video shooting of their company profile with the appointed videographer by ILAM, Layar Lucida.
Gamuda Parks x ILAM Webinar
Designing for Biodiversity

This webinar was organised in collaboration with Gamuda Parks’ International Day of Biological Diversity (IDB) 2021 month. Thank you Gamuda Parks and Gamuda Land for inviting three speakers with a diverse background to talk about ‘Designing for Biodiversity’. They were Assoc. Prof. Dr Mohd Nazre, Lecturer, Faculty of Forestry and Environment, UPM; Dr Christine Fletcher, Ecologist and Gamuda Parks Panel of Expert and Julien Hodson-Walker, Landscape Architect, Founder and Managing Director of Walrus Design Sdn Bhd. The live session attracted more than 200 live audiences.

Introduction to MyCESMM for Landscape Work

ILAM Centre of Excellence (ICE) was proud to bring the third virtual course on MyCESMM for Landscape Work. This course was a brief introduction course on Malaysian Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement (MyCESMM) about standardisation of construction procurement, updated version, principles, application of the work classification and method related charges. These applications were supported by selected sample works of the landscape construction elements on the road and paving, earthworks, retaining wall and structure.
