Seminar on Botanical Gardens

Date 13-14 January 2015

Venue: Training Institute, Kuala Lumpur City Hall

 

Kuala Lumpur City Hall, in collaboration with the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), organised a seminar about the establishment of co-operation between the botanical gardens, for the purpose of plant conservation in Malaysia. The first day was packed with paper presentations from various botanical gardens in Malaysia while the second day was filled with workshops which discussed issues, solutions, programmes, and the roles of each botanical garden. ILAM was among the panel members who contributed ideas and feedback.

 

Flavour UTM 2015: Savour Your Life

“Flavour UTM 2015; Savour Your Life” is a seminar program which was organised to meet the requirements of the course work for Sbel 4753 (Seminar Landscape) for final year students of the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, in the faculty of Built Environment, UTM. The objective was to expose students to programme planning and management skills, which allows them to manage a seminar program with the help of coordinating lecturers. This an ILAM Southern Chapter event for 2015.

 

Courtesy Call to

Perdana Leadership Foundation

A special courtesy call was held at the Perdana Leadership Foundation to meet the former Malaysian Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad to discuss a few matters with regards to the development of landscape architecture in Malaysia. The session was concluded with a souvenir presentation to Tun.

 

Aid for Flood Victims

Venue: Kampung Seberang Chenor, Temerloh, Pahang

 

The flooding disaster which hit Malaysia in December 2014 caused a major impact to the nation. As a nation which aims to care for others, ILAM, under the Social Welfare Committee, lead by LAr. Danial A. Hasan, started a donation campaign in January to raise funds for the flood victim in Temerloh, Pahang. So far, the campaign has raised more than RM8,000. The committee, joined by ILAM President. Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir, Vice President, LAr. Sabarudin Buang, ILAM member, LAr. Mohd Jasri

and ILAM office personnel, Zarina Muis accompanied by family members, visited the flood victims to hand over the donation to the head of the village and also to the local school.

 

Sime Darby Guidelines on Forest Trees

As part of Sime Darby’s commitment to protect and restore the environment to enhance communities, special internal guidelines on threatened forest trees were drafted. A visit to ILAM was conducted by Sime Darby to discuss a collaboration to make this publication a reality. ILAM was represented by Vice President, LAr. Sabaruddin Buang and council members.

 

Workshop on Flood Mitigation, Landscape Architecture Approach

Venue: Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)

 

Following the flood incident in the east cost in December 2014, ILAM conducted a workshop to look at solutions and ideas for flood mitigation and prevention measures through landscape architectural solutions. The one day workshop was held to generate ideas which can help to prevent and minimise flood problems. It was attended by landscape architects from various disciplines such as educators, policy makers and landscape consultants.

 

National Landscape Day 2015 Celebration

Each year, National Landscape Day is celebrated nationwide on 3 March and this year the celebration was once again organised by the National Landscape Department, on the 7 March 2015, with the theme “Public Park, A place for Healthy Lifestyle”.  The event was launched by Minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Governments, YB Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan. Joining in the event were ILAM Vice President, LAr. Sabaruddin Buang, Ex-officio, LAr. Mohd Fadrillah Mohd Taib and ILAM fellow, Dato’ LAr. Ismail Ngah.

 

ILAM Professional Examination

A month after the KAIAL Professional Courses, the annual ILAM Professional Examination was held in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) for two days to certify the next batch of professional Landscape Architects. This year, there were 71 candidates with a total of 34 candidates passing the examinations. The concluding ceremony was held on 13 June 2015 during the ILAM AGM.

 

The Star Property Interview

A special interview was conducted by Star Property for a 5 page ILAM special MLAA supplement in this local daily. The interview, attended by the ILAM President along with 5 landscape architects, focused on current landscape design issues, approaches and views.

 

Asian Landscape Architecture Conference, Beijing, China

Date: 20-22 March 2015

Venue: Beijing, China

 

Yuan Ye Summit Forum, which has now completed its 5th annual cycle, aims to improve the exchange and cooperation of international landscape designers. In this meeting of the Asia-Pacific landscape industry, over 50 international scholars presented their papers before nearly 1000 participants. A Paper entitled “Sustainable Landscape for Urban Green Development in Malaysia; The role of Landscape Architects” was presented by the President of ILAM, Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir.

 

Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA) Gala Night

The MLAA Gala Night takes place each year in April, to honour the crème de la crème of the landscape architectural field. With more than 700 guests in attendance this year, it was one of the biggest MLAA Gala Nights ever.

 

“PAM- Tan Sri Ar. Chan Sau Lai Architecture Award” Jury Session

ILAM was invited by Persatuan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) to be one of the jurors for the PAM-Tan Sri Ar. Chan Sau Lai Architecture Award. The objective of the award is to recognise outstanding achievements by students of architectural design and to expose new talent to the profession and the industry. ILAM was represented by President, Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir.

 

ILAM Landscape Architecture Programme Recognition at UTM

A panel from ILAM formed a team to visit Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) at Skudai, and UTM Space in Kuala Lumpur, for the recognition visit of the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture programme offered by the university. ILAM was represented by LAr. Sharipah Mohamed, LAr. Dr. Suhardi Maulan and LAr. Dr. Mohd Ramzi Mohd Hussein.

 

Floria 2015 Student Design Pre-Selection

A group of ILAM panelists was formed to assess submissions of garden design proposals from various schools and higher institutions for qualification to participate in the Royal Floria Putrajaya 2015. The jury consisted of LAr. Rohaniah Mohd Noor, LAr. Khairina Zek Khairuddin, LAr. Sabaruddin Buang, LAr. Ragubalan and LAr. Nurulhuda Hayati. The session was organised by Floria Putrajaya Sdn. Floria Designer Gardens Presentation

This year, a select group of landscape architects who represented ILAM at the Royal Floria Putrajaya, presented their garden concepts and design approaches to the organiser, Floria Putrajaya Sdn. Singapore Green Technical Tour 2015

Date: 7-8 May 2015

Venue: Singapore

 

With the theme of “Green Infrastructure”, this tour focused on the role of landscape being an essential element in remediating environmental issues such as urban heat island, flash-flood, greenhouse effect etc. due to rapid urbanisation. Using Singapore as a case study, the 3 focus areas were ‘Rooftop Greenery’, ‘Vertical Greenery’ and ‘Water Sensitive Urban Design’. This tour attracted 40 ILAM members for the two day event.

 

Meeting with Drafting Division, Attorney General’s Chambers of Malaysia

A working committee meeting was held with the drafting division of Attorney General’s Chambers of Malaysia, with regards to the Landscape Architect Act. The meeting was attended by representatives from AG Chamber, Legal Division of the Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government, the National Landscape Department and ILAM. ILAM was represented by President, Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir, Ex-officio. LAr. Mohd Fadrillah Mohd Taib and LAr. Dr. Suhardi Maulan. The next meeting concerning the details of the act will be held on 15-16 June 2015. It is hoped that the process will be smooth sailing and the act is expected to be tabled in the Parliament by end of 2015.

 

Kuala Lumpur Urban Design and Greenery Committee

This is a continuous meeting committee which faces the issues of urban design and planning. Topics include design and development innovation, sustainability, tourism, greenery and landscape, infrastructure, traffic matters and engineering and community development. ILAM representatives on the panel are LAr. Dr. Mohd Ramzi Mohd. Hussain and LAr. Nurulhuda Hayati Ibrahim.

 

FLORIA 2015 JUDGING PROCESS

This year, ILAM was involved as the jurors who set the judging criteria and formed the judging team for the outdoor garden showcase. The team was comprised of 27 jurors from both ILAM members and international representatives. The judging team was divided into 7 groups to evaluate the garden showcases.

 

 

“Anugerah Keceriaan Felda 2015” Judging

This year, LAr. Mohd Fadrillah Mohd Taib was once again appointed as a juror for the national award “Anugerah Kecerian Kg FELDA”, which aims to promote conducive green living at all the FELDA settlements nationwide. The jury session ran from 4-15 Jun 2015 and ILAM was proud to be part of this annual programme to elevate the quality of our living environment.

 

 

MBPJ Open Spaces Workshop

Date: 15-16 June

Venue: Hotel Empire, Subang Jaya

 

A two day workshop about the preparation of an open space guideline was conducted by Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) aimed to discuss matters such as the allocation of open spaces, the components, enforcement and the control of landscape plan approval. This workshop was attended by ILAM Vice President. LAr. Sabarudin Buang, who also delivered a speech during the workshop.

 

MCIEA Awards Assessment

The Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Awards (MCIEA) which is hosted by CIDB Malaysia, is the Malaysian premier accolade for all round excellence. It is an effort to recognise the players’ achievements in the construction industry. The assessment of the award began with the National Cancer Institute at Presint 7, Putrajaya. Among the panels are members from PAM, SIRIM, IEM, UITM, with ILAM proudly presented by LAr. Noriah Mat.

 

 

Dabong Post Flood Relief
Date: 5 June 2015
Venue: Dabong, Kelantan

The Faculty of Built Environment, UTM, with the collaboration of ILAM, UPM and UIA, jointly organised a post relief programme to restore the school compound of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dabong, Kuala Krai, Kelantan, with landscape works and planting. The ILAM team, led by Hon. Secretary, LAr. Dr. Nor Ataih Ismail, and several council members, contributed their efforts to ensure the school compound was brought back to the original state for the children to continue learning in a comfortable environment.

 

 

GBI Township V2.0

Working Group Meeting

The GBI Township Tool V2.0 Development Meeting was held to further develop the tools for townships. The meeting also welcomed two transport planners who are reviewing sections regarding TRC Transportation & Connectivity. ILAM was represented by LAr. Noriah Mat.

 

 

IFLA World Congress

& World Council Meeting 2015

Venue: St. Petersburg, Russia

ILAM was represented by Dato’ LAr. Ismail Ngah, who was also IFLA Asia Pacific Chairman at the IFLA World Council Meeting in Moscow. The 3-day congress was filled with keynote speeches, parallel sessions, poster sessions and technical tours. Fringe activities included an international student charrette and competition phase.

 

ILAM AGM 2014/2015

The year, the ILAM Annual General Meeting was attended by more than 189 members (110 Corporate Members, 78 Graduate Members and 1 Associate Member). This annual event was the afternoon session, following the morning session of Playpoint CPD Talks. The highlight of the AGM was the certificate presentation to 34 new ILAM Corporate Members year 2015 who had succeeded in the ILAM Professional Examination in March 2015.

 

42nd BIM Annual General Meeting

The annual Malaysian Professional Centre (BIM) General Meeting was held with the participation of various professional bodies. Nilai Polytechnic Student Visit to ILAM

A group of 26 students and 5 lecturers made a visit to ILAM to further understand the profession of a landscape architect and the future prospects in the industry. During the visit, the group was hosted and briefed by ILAM council member, LAr. Dr. Mohd Ramzi Mohd Hussain.

 

Workshop of Industry Standards Committee on Mechanical Engineering (ISC F)

Date: 20-21 August 2015

Venue: Hotel Concorde, Shah Alam

 

A workshop was organised by SIRIM Malaysia to ease the process of updating a Malaysian Standards (MS) for Mechanical Engineering under IFC F. Among the workshop activities was the updating of the five year old Malaysian Standards, proposal for a working timeline for each Standard Development Committee (SDC) and to ensure the implementation of MS in the new projects. This workshop was attended by several landscape architects which includes ILAM President, Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir.

 

Workshop For Revision
of MS966 Playground Equipment

Date: 25-26 August 2015
Venue: Hotel Concrode, Shah Alam

The Malaysian Standards MS966 for playground equipment was organised by SIRIM with chaired by Ministry of Health and the Technical Committee consists of members from Perbadanan Putrajaya KPDNKK, JLN, ILAM, PSAM, SIRIM, QAS, CAP, UiTM, Consumer Association and Industry Manufacturers. The Malaysian Standards (MS) also adopted an additional two standards with regards to Safety Surfacing and Impact Attenuation for Playgrounds which is scheduled to be published by SIRIM beginning of 2016.

 

Merdeka Raya 2015

Venue: Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)

An afternoon filled with merry making and celebrating togetherness was held at the compound of a Traditional Malay Village style outdoor museum at UPM. This event was organised by ILAM to jointly celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri and the 58th Malaysia National Day. Among those who attended were about 60 ILAM members with families, who spend the afternoon socialising and taking photos in a traditional village environment filled with delicious delicacies and food.

 

 

Discussion on Term of Reference
for Kuala Lumpur Landscape

Master Plan 2015-2025

A meeting was called by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) with ILAM to discuss further on the preparation of “Term of Reference” for the incoming Kuala Lumpur Landscape Master Plan 2015-2025 to replace the existing KL Landscape Master Plan 2003. The discussion was attended by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Landscape Department officers with ILAM represented by President, Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir, Vice President, LAr. Sabarudin Buang and council member, LAr. Dr. Mohd Ramzi Mohd Hussain.

Following the discussion, a meeting was held on 12 October 2015 to come to an agreement about the Terms of Reference for the engagement of landscape consultants and the scope of work.
 

 

IFLA Asia Pacific Congress

& APR Council Meeting 2015

The IFLA Asia Pacific Congress and APR Council Meeting was held from 6 - 9 September 2015. The IFLA APR Council Meeting on 6 September 2015 was attended by ILAM President, Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir, and ILAM official delegate, LAr. Dr. Nor Atiah Ismail. During the meeting, ILAM presented the endorsement proposal of Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA) to the IFLA Asia Pacific Council Members and we are delighted to announce that MLAA is now officially recognised by the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA).The meeting also bid farewell to Dato’ LAr. Ismail Ngah as the outgoing IFLA Asia Pacific President. The team now welcomes IFLA Asia Pacific’s new President, Damian Tang, from Singapore.

 

ILAM Humanitarian Programme:

Rebuilding Ranau, Sabah

Date: 17 October 2015

Venue: Kampung Pinausok, Ranau, Sabah

 

ILAM Sabah Chapter initiated a humanitarian programme, ‘Rebuilding Ranau”, intended to restore the water supply at Kampung Pinausok, Kundasang at Ranau District. The programme started with an online donation drive to collect funds for the humanitarian programme followed by the work to install 10 water tanks with the capacity of 4,000 gallons to supply between 5-10 families for about 2-3 days with the water source channeled from the nearby river. A more detailed report can be found in the Special Report section (page 14) in this issue.
 

 

Dialogue with Stakeholders on Open Spaces Planning Guideline for Development Approval in Petaling Jaya

ILAM was represented by LAr. Samsul Rohaizad Mohd Jemoner who attended the one day dialogue with the Petaling Jaya City Hall (MBPJ) to discuss the requirements for open spaces in the development of Petaling Jaya. From the dialogue, a draft proposal will be presented to MBPJ Town Planning Department for further improvements.

 

ICOMOS-IFLA ISCCL 2015
Annual Meeting

& International Symposium

LAr. Dr Nor Atiah Ismail attended and presented a paper, ‘Attributes and typology of Perak Malay Culturally Responsive Landscape’ at the ICOMOS-IFLA ISCCL 2015 Annual Meeting and Symposium which focused on the issue
of ‘Rethinking Lifescape-Linking Landscape in Everyday Life’ The symposium was held in Jeju Stone Park - an ecological and cultural park that displays the history of stone culture, pivotal to the history and culture of Jeju Island. Among other topics discussed were: unique rural landscape, sacred places, stonescape and landscape for folk beliefs.

Green Urbanscape Asia 2015
Date: 5-7 November 2015
Venue: MAX Atria, Singapore EXPO

Themed ‘The Science of Greening the City in a Garden’, Green Urbanscape Asia Congress 2015 was a knowledge-sharing platform held alongside the Green Urbanscape Asia Exhibition and International Skyrise Greenery Conference. The congress featured four primary tracks with dedicated themes of Turf Management, Arboriculture, Urban Biodiversity, Playgrounds & Parks.

This is also an annual programme that is supported by ILAM with an encouraging participation of ILAM members for international networking and technology exposure. On behalf of ILAM, Assoc. Prof LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir delivered a paper entitled ‘Landscape Architecture Developments & Trends in Malaysia’ during the congress.

ILAM-MGBC CPD Seminar Series
Mitigating Disaster in Landscape
Architecture Design

ILAM, with the collaboration of Malaysia Green Building Confederation (MGBC), once again organised a CPD seminar focused on design approaches to mitigate disasters. This record breaking, full house seminar was presented by four speakers, namely Prof. LAr. Dr. Hj. Nik Ismail Azlan, on Disaster Management and Landscape Planning; Prof. Ir. Dr. Nor Azazi Zakaria, on Sustainable Flood Mitigation Approach; social media icon, Raja Shamri, sharing his personal experience from the flood that hit Kelantan state, while Dr. Wan Srihani Wan Mohamad spoke about various shelter home designs for flood prone areas.

ILAM CPD Technical Tour
Northern Heritage Discovery

Venue: Langkawi

The ILAM Northern Chapter committee organised a nature and cultural discovery tour to Langkawi to study the local cultural landscape and tourism spots in Langkawi. About 25 participants, consisting of northern chapter members, and other regions, participated in this 3 day-2 night event. Among the key activities were visits to the Oriental Village, Langkawi Cable Car, Kilim GeoPark Tour, and hands-on activities at the rice field in Laman Padi.

Monitoring Meeting

A meeting about the monitoring of the implementation of National Landscape Policy was chaired by the Director General of the National Landscape Department, LAr. Esa Ahmad. The meeting was jointly attended by representatives from ILAM, namely, Dato’ LAr. Ismail Ngah, LAr. Dr. Mohd Ramzi Mohd Hussain, and LAr. Dr. Suhardi Maulan.

Kuala Lumpur Design Award
Gala Night

Venue: D’Saji, Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur

An exclusive awards gala night was organised by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) in conjunction with KL Design Week 2015, to honour the best of the design industry. The gala night was graced by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall Executive Director of Planning Department, YBhg. Datuk Hj. Mohd Najib bin Hj. Mohd. The night witnessed awards being presented to various industries including a landscape category. ILAM Vice President, LAr. Sabaruddin Buang, and Honorary Treasurer, LAr. Abd. Aziz Othman, attended the event.

ALAM 7 – The Assembly of Landscape Architecture Students
Date:  2-5 December 2015
Venue: Kolej Universiti Agrosains Malaysia (UCAM)

The annual Assembly of Landscape Architecture Students, or ALAM, has now come to its 7th edition. This time, it was hosted by Kolej Universiti Agrosains Malaysia (UCAM), with the fun theme of ‘Oh, Kampungku’. Guests experienced nostalgic moments as village activities were brought back to life. ILAM has been a patron of this event since its inception, and thus the programme was officiated by ILAM President, Assoc Prof LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir. The assembly provided a platform for 225 landscape architecture students from 6 higher learning institutions to meet and exchange ideas.

Roundtable Discussion

A round table discussion session was organised by the ILAM Professional Practice Committee to provide a platform for practising landscape architects to discuss issues, challenges and potentials, and to bridge collaborations between landscape consultants. The session was attended by more than 30 ILAM practising members.

Landscape Architect Act Workshop

This part of the Landscape Architect Act discussion focused on the scale of fees for landscape architectural services. The session was organised by the National Landscape Department (JLN) and ILAM, and drew participants from landscape architect consultants and JLN officers from the Policy and Development Department.

Accreditation Panel Visit to UPM

A group, comprising the ILAM Landscape Architecture Programme Accreditation Panel, visited the Faculty of Design & Architecture, UPM, for the accreditation process. The group was briefed by the faculty’s Dean and had a close look at the Bachelor and Master Landscape Architecture programmes offered by the faculty.

Majlis Perbandaran Selayang (MPS)
Landscape Master Plan

Coordination Meeting
Date: 10 December 2015
Venue: Majlis Perbandaran Selayang

The meeting was chaired by LAr. Mokhtar Affandi, who is the coordinator for the MPS Landscape Master Plan. The meeting agenda mainly focused on the presentation of the city landscape master plan by landscape consultants. ILAM was invited to the meeting and represented by LAr. Khalid Zakaria and LAr. Charles Teo for the participants of the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA) on the Do’s and Don’ts in the preparation of their submission materials for MLAA. The participants were able to browse through the previous years’ best submissions as a guide.
