BLOCK 1: GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE
Landscape Architect is a profession that focuses on forming and shaping spaces, landscape architecture is architecture with a broader scale, one that incorporates both buildings and the environment that surrounds them. Parks, public plazas, school campuses — all of these places are designed by landscape architects. So too are a fleet of strategies to mitigate flooding, from stormwater management systems to “green infrastructure” elements like living shorelines, river, marsh restoration and dune enhancement.

The Jewel Singapore

Jewel is an integrated project at the Singapore Airport that creates a multi-sensory experience of nature within a climate-controlled glass dome. An eight-acre garden over interior retail space integrates unexpected features that attract adventurers of all ages. Gardens terrace down nearly 30 meters to a central gathering space with informal amphitheater seating. Restaurants and cafes as well as an event plaza can all be accessed from within the garden. Each night, visitors can experience a light and water show at the center of the building, where water and captured rain fall from the roof becoming a projection screen.

River of Life: Transforming Urban Connectivity via Green Infrastructure
Divided into three main components – river cleaning, river master-planning and beautification – the USD1.3-billion River of Life project covers the confluences of three city rivers, with a total area of 781 hectares and 63 hectares of water bodies. The project is set to bring the community ‘back’ to the river through a 100 per cent transformation into a vibrant waterfront with high economic and commercial value, rejuvenating the city’s river and re-connecting it to the surrounding urban fabric.

When Trees Meet Building
In an effort to create a more pleasant, healthier and sustainable built environment, architects, engineers and developers are creating increasingly greener buildings - and doing it in a more literal way than ever before. The current revival of green architecture began in the 1970s, when the energy crisis, coupled with growing awareness of humankind’s impact on the environment, propelled architects and engineers to think more carefully about sustainable development.

Although there are many different ways to approach sustainable building design, an increasing number of architects and engineers began to incorporate green roofs and other energy saving measures into their projects.

TRX is taking seriously the need for a dynamic public realm. Instead of a separated district, TRX is designed to seamlessly exist within its neighbourhood. The whole 70-acre district in the city centre will remain porous to the larger landscape around it, allowing for a public realm that
is fully integrated into the urban fabric.
At the centre of it all is a 10-acre park, designed across multiple levels, including on the roof of the shopping mall, creating numerous opportunities for visual and physical connectivity between these two important landmarks. A key component of the holistic sustainability agenda of TRX, the central park provides lush greenery and shade, increases natural habitats and ecological value, reduces the heat island effect, and collects rainwater for reuse.

This ‘Urban Public Spaces Below Highway’ is an initiative under the Butterworth Baharu programme to increase the amount of public spaces in the Penang Sentral harbour front area. This project aims to activate under utilised spaces located under the Butterworth Outer Ring Road.

By establishing attractive and functional open spaces for community gathering and healthy recreational use, the project aims to maximise the potential of these inefficiently used spaces and to improve liveability in Butterworth.

Bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better, and 51-year-old Malaysian artist Eddie Putera proves it with his stunning miniature dioramas. Putera combines his talents of miniature modeling and photography to create scenes so detailed that it’s hard to believe they are all hand-made mini versions of objects, and not real life still photography.

Every new piece of art presents a distinct set of challenges for her. Using reusable wastes, she must conceptualise not only the final desired outcome but also the processes and techniques involved to transform these materials to get that final desired outcome.
